Nubia Swimwear

I’ve always known Nubia is something special—after all, it’s not every day one can shop for swimwear selected by Brazilian owners. But it wasn’t until I had four surgeries in six months, each with lengthy recoveries, that I realized what a gift they’ve been. Why? Because I still feel confident in suits purchased over the years. With an eye for all of life’s stages and challenges, Nubia is a virtual beachwear emporium.  

Spa Central

Though their services keep me from being able to recommend a bail bond agent, Spa Central is also essential for my personal products. Owner Kelli Fuller is careful to purchase only the finest brands with ethical practices.

The Cookhouse

When you need that kind of food, The Cookhouse’s short-order cook is a master. So are the longtime servers and owner who manage an endless crowd. It’s open for breakfast and lunch; I give extra points for leaving Belgian in Belgium and making thin waffles instead. Call it a proper delivery system for butter and syrup!

Shadowbrook, Capitola

Shadowbrook is known for being a romantic restaurant, but I have a thing for the bar. Take advantage of the free taxi if staying within 3 miles, and then enjoy a magical walk through the gardens. If you need assistance (or are wearing show-off shoes), take the funicular—a cable car—down the hillside where the river greets the restaurant.

Adelitas Taqueria Restaurant and Bar

When not shopping, I’m dancing (hateful, I know). Since lessons are two hours from home, I require quick, healthy fuel. That’s where Adelitas comes in. Casual ease meets fresh, well-rounded food just minutes from the flat side of Highway 17—where traffic grinds to its customary halt. Consider it the next time you’re headed to Santa Cruz.

The Wienery

It’s a good sign when a hotdog restaurant offers drinkable wines by the glass. Tucked away in East Sacramento (of “Lady Bird” fame), it’s hard to beat their menu. To be perfectly frank, these dogs have style.  

Allora

This food belongs in your mouth, not on a lens, so pardon the hasty pics. Boasting an award-winning chef and an advanced sommelier, the husband/wife owners have created something truly spectacular. If only I had a Michelin Star to award…

The Candy House of Davis

When my son was too young to avoid errands with me, I resorted to bribery. A chocolate fish at the Candy House would get the car washed nearby, but don’t let a kid’s simplistic palate fool you. This handmade, old-school chocolate is done to perfection.

Let Them Eat Cake

Oh I’ve eaten plenty! My favorite cheap thrill with an expensive taste is just across from the renowned Davis Farmers Market. Some splurge on a quick snack while others get more serious for weddings and other special events. Vegan and gluten-free options available daily, Paleo by request.

Outside-In

Everything one could want to showcase elegance in the home and garden. Personal products like luxury robes as well as a separate children’s store take the venue even further. Discover excellence in every nook, just as I have for the past 15 years.

Creme de la Creme

Aptly named, this postage stamp-sized shop is as quaint as the European experiences we dream about. French-inspired treasures transport the spirit while the owner, Christine, tends to your unique requests.    

Del Oliva

Character found at every corner, you must meet the owner, Eddie, and sample infused olive oil and balsamic vinegar. It’s an entertaining way to spend an afternoon, and salads, pastas, and more just got a lot easier. I love the flavors as much as the ample supply of housewares and art.
